Making it through state competitions and getting to DECA ICDC 2018 can be a grueling process, so first off, we’d just like to congratulate everyone who qualified this year! If anybody’s a superhero around here, it’s all of you! Go get that beautiful DECA hardware!
If you’re like all of us DECA alumni here at EXP Trips, who at one time or another were preparing ourselves to take the DECA competition stage too, you’ve thought long and hard about what kind of events to focus on at conferences. Of course, you have to evaluate your strengths and skills, commit to what you’ll focus on, and then put in all the work to get ready! That’s a lot of commitment, so naturally, what event you choose says a lot about you!
As you know, there are 5 major career cluster categories in DECA competition to choose from:
And, there are 10 different types of events!
- Principles Of Business Administration Events
- Team Decision Events
- Individual Series Events
- Personal Financial Literacy Event
- Business Operations Research Events
- Chapter Team Events
- Entrepreneurship Events
- Marketing Representative Events
- Professional Selling And Consulting Events
- Online Events
So, now that you’ve come this far and you’ve got ICDC 2018 Atlanta in your sights, what do your event choices say about you? We’ve broken it down into the most accurate measure of character we could possibly think of… DECA ICDC 2018 events as MARVEL Superheroes!
Which MARVEL superhero are you most like?! (Choose your event category below)
What does it take to manage a business and kick some serious conflict resolution trash? Well, it takes a lot of things. But certainly one of the essential skills to have is being a great leader.
Captain America is an incredible leader, a delegator, and has incredible resilience! His experience with leading the Avengers into epic battles would be incredibly useful in running any kind of business team. Black Panther is also well qualified as a leader since he is, like, an Amazonian king and all. He is both an incredible contributor to tackling the task at hand on his own, as well an effective organizer (see gif above). Like Black Panther, Thor also has ample experience leading a kingdom, and for many of the same reasons, would excel at any kind of business management. Business management & administration events would be walks in the park for these three.
Star-Lord / Iron Man
Star-Lord’s story is an impressive kind of “started from the bottom, now we here” kind of thing. Starting with nothing, not even the knowledge of where he came from or who his parents were, he worked his way up to having his own ship, a super cool crew of misfit heroes, and is considered one of the foremost protectors of the galaxy. If that’s not a classic entrepreneurial grind than I don’t know what is!
Iron Man is a totally different story, but he is no less suited to absolutely destroy the entrepreneurial events if he were competing at ICDC 2018. Tony Stark is not only the mechanized, rocket-propelled, suit-wearing, technical super genius flying through the air we all know as Iron Man. He also sits at the head of the great Stark Industries, a huge corporation started by his father. Although he is not the one who originally got things rolling with his company, Tony is always concerned with the latest in technical advances and strategy, and he is on top of what it takes to always have a competitive edge.
Both of these styles and skillsets would surely come in handy when competing in entrepreneurship events at ICDC 2018.
Presenting a product or a service to someone in an appealing way so that they will have interest in it takes a lot of skill. Both Spiderman and Rocket Raccoon have the incredible knack for attracting others to their cause.
Rocket is not always everyone’s favorite creature to deal with, but when he needs to enlist some help, or when he wants to be convincing, he’s very effective – even when he wants someone to fetch for him someone’s a prosthetic leg, just for his own amusement.
Spiderman is just simply a crowd favorite. When he swings in, everyone goes crazy for him! Plus, he’s always in the papers, no matter whether he wants to be or not… You can’t buy that kind of social influence! And that’s a pretty darn useful tool in contemporary marketing.
The Hulk / Doctor Strange / Invisible Woman
These three are the ones you might consider to be the ‘whiz kids’ of the group. The Hulk, Doctor Strange, and Invisible Girl are known for their intellect. Outside of their work in the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, saving the world from evil (you know the usual stuff), they each also had very impressive professional careers in the sciences, which would have required extensive amounts of schooling, including lots of mathematics. I think we can all agree that these brainiacs would likely go totally undefeated at ICDC 2018 in any of the finance events.
What do you want most from a tour operator, hotel manager, or travel guide?… For them to know as much as possible about as many details as possible! They need to be on top of things and to be the ultimate source of information to match all of your questions, needs, and wants. Who can do this better than a telepathic mind reader or an expert adventurer/tactical coordinator (basic skills we look for in every EXP TripHost applicant)?
Professor X knows what you want before you even know what you want. Making sure that you have everything that you need to make your experience doing whatever it is that you’re doing amazing would almost be too easy for him. On the other hand, before you ever arrive, Marvel Girl has undoubtedly already explored every inch of wherever it is that you are staying and knows all of the best ways for you to spend your time while you’re there.
When it comes to competing in the hospitality & tourism events at ICDC, Professor X, Marvel Girl, and the EXP TripHosts have got every tool necessary to absolutely kill it! …Huh, what’s that? What do you mean EXP TripHosts aren’t MARVEL superheroes? Nonsense. *rolling of eyes*
These are the events we think these superheroes would (HULK) smash if they were competing at ICDC 2018 in Atlanta this year. What do you think? Leave a comment and follow us on social media and let us know what events you think these superheroes would do well in, or maybe why they wouldn’t do so hot!
Whatever events you will be competing in this coming April in Atlanta, we wish you the best of luck! Go crush it!
