There are some seriously cool pieces of art scattered all throughout New York City. We like to think we are the experts when it comes to New York student trips, but we are always pleasantly surprised by all of the amazing new things we find every time we go there! It must be because the Big Apple is such a jivin’ & happenin’ place! (Even more jivin’ & happenin’ than that phrase…)
Luckily, we are headed to NYC a whole lot here in the next few months with tons of different groups! We’ll be doing some pretty sweet stuff on these trips. We really like to constantly find fun new things to take students to do and to see. It never ceases to amaze us when we discover new hidden gems we are always stumbling upon out there in the city.
Upcoming art student trips on our calendar have got us looking out for awesome art all around the city. We’ve found some exciting ones, so we wanted to share them with you!
New York City has an incredible art scene, and that even extends to the subway! If you were to take a ride on the MTA, the subway lines that run all throughout the city, you would be able to see an incredible collection of artwork, without even having to leave the tunnels.
One of the newest and most intriguing locations along the MTA network is the 72nd Street Station. The artwork along the walls depicting New Yorkers symbolize the diversity of the city’s residents. These beautifully crafted pieces of art give you a little taste of New York life!
The Inside Out Project
Perhaps one of the most inspiring art projects in NYC is called The Inside Out Project. This art collective, which brings together participants of all cultures and tradition to share their work in cities around the world, is a platform for individuals to express ideas. Through portraits that are pasted in all domains of public space, participants are able to reach greater audiences and to tell their stories about what they stand for, creating a community and conversations that would otherwise never exist!
Museum of Modern Art – Uniqlo Free Admission Days
The Museum of Modern Art is one of the most famous spaces in the world for contemporary artists to show their art and installations of all kinds. Among some of the most exciting exhibits to make it to the museum was a giant blue air-filtering spike structure called ‘Wendy’. This beautiful work of architecture, displayed for a time in the main courtyard of the museum, is designed as both a beautiful addition to the aesthetic of the city and a way to eliminate the air pollution of roughly 260 cars! This is just one example of some of the incredible work presented at the MOMA.
For art students looking to see some of the most unique and inspiring works of art they’ll find anywhere, this is definitely a stop worth taking. Not only is it a great addition to any new york student trip, Friday evenings are free of charge for visitors thanks to Uniqlo brand, who sponsors these free admission nights!
Os Gemeos x Futura
Os Gemeos is famous for his HUGE character pieces that her paints all over the world, livening the visual landscape anywhere his murals pop up! One of the most remarkable pieces of street art you can find in the city is a giant 80ft depiction of a child painted on the side of a large building on 21st Street. If you haven’t experienced art of this magnitude and size before, it’s certainly not something you want to miss! We’d actually be pretty surprised if you were able to miss a skyscraper child of that enormity…
With the creation of one of the most colorful and eye-catching pieces of street art found in NYC, Eduardo Kobra shares his own spin on the iconic image of the sailor kissing the woman in Times Square on V-J Day. His vivid kaleidoscope approach adds flare and uniqueness to this particular piece that might just be worth your time on your next New York student trip.
British Muralist Phlegm in NYC
British muralist Phlegm completed an extensive project throughout both the West & East Village Manhattan and Chelsea in 2012, bringing a flare of truly breathtaking work to the city playgrounds. These are some of the most interesting pieces of work we’ve found hiding around the city that art students might want to check out on their next New York trip!
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Met is the OG of art museums in New York City. With thousands upon thousands of pieces circulating its walls and floors all the time, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a staple of any art student trip. This is where some of the most renowned artists from around the world and who have ever lived have had their work displayed. Located in the heart of Central Park, you simply can’t miss it!
We will be headed to the Big City for some exciting NYC trips very soon with students from all kinds of different groups, which is pretty darn cool if you ask us! There’s so much to do there that no matter what groups come with us there is always plenty to do, and no two trips are ever the same.
